The Librarians' Association of the University of Waterloo joins other associations
and individuals in its support of Dale Askey and McMaster University in the face of
litigation from Edwin Mellen Press.
As librarians, we value freedom of expression. This freedom is fundamental to
society and crucial to our work. We draw from the experiences and opinions of
colleagues to help inform our own decisions regarding the collections we manage.
To think this kind of exchange is being challenged is alarming.
We agree with the statement issued by the Canadian Association of Research
Libraries and the Association of Research Libraries on February 14, 2013 that, "...
a librarian must be able to offer his or her assessment of a publisher’s products or
practices free from such intimidation."
We urge Edwin Mellen Press to drop its lawsuit and find more collegial and
constructive ways to address its concerns.
